BIKE PARK POLICIES

AGE POLICY

•Children under 5 yrs are not permitted in the Bike Park.

•Children 5-10 are required to be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian (19yrs or older) when riding in the Bike Park.

•Children 11-15 are strongly recommended to be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian (19yrs or older) when riding in the Bike Park.

The parent or guardian must sign the Bike Park waiver for any Child under 18 years.

SHOCK RECOMMENDATION

Thunder Mountain Bike Park recommends at least 125mm (5 inches) of front and rear suspension for all bikes used at the park.

Ensure that your suspension is tuned properly and is set up for your body weight and riding ability

BRAKE POLICY

All bikes riding in the Thunder Mountain Bike Park must have one functioning brake per axle. This keeps fixed gear bikes, dirt jump bikes, BMX bikes, kids bikes with coaster brakes and beach cruisers off the trails but allows regular mountain bikes, adaptive bikes and mountain unicycles to ride on the hill.

WAIVER POLICY

All riders must sign a waiver. Riders under the age of 18 must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

ALCOHOL POLICY

No outside alcohol is permitted on the property of Berkshire East Mountain Resort, including parking lots, lodge, or trail system. Drugs are forbidden from Thunder Mountain Bike Park.

The trails of Thunder Mountain Bike Park are rough and demanding on both the bike and body.

Before riding and periodically during the day always inspect your equipment or have it checked by a qualified bike mechanic.

  1. Ensure your bike is in good shape and properly adjusted
  2. Inspect bike frame for cracks, damaged or dented areas
  3. Ensure you have sufficient brake pad to stop your bike while descending
  4. Front and rear axles (skewers) should be tight
  5. Handlebars and grips should be comfortably positioned and securely fastened.
  6. Headset and stem must be secure and properly adjusted.
  7. Seat and seat-post need to be fastened securely

Mountain Biker’s Responsibility Code

1. Stay in control at all times. It is your responsibility to avoid other persons and objects around you

2. Do not stop where you obstruct the trail or are not visible from above

3. When entering a trail or starting downhill, you should look uphill and yield to other riders

4. Please assist if you are involved in or witness a collision or accident and identify yourself to the Bike Patrol

5. Keep off closed areas and obey all signs and warnings

6. Stay on marked trails. Do not cut switchbacks

7. Stay off lifts and away from the Bike Park if your ability is impaired through the use of drugs or alcohol

8. You must have sufficient dexterity, ability and knowledge to safely ride and unload lifts. If in doubt, ask the attendant

9. Hiking in the Bike Park is not permitted

10. Do not feed, provoke or approach wildlife

Thunder Mountain Bike Park 5 Safety Tips

Thunder Mountain Bike Park is an awesome place to ride but it can also require a strong presence of mind to ensure safety. The best way to stay safe is to ride responsibly and stay on point. Here are five tips to avoid becoming a nuisance/danger to yourself and others so everyone can enjoy long days shredding the park together:

  1. Don’t Stand on Takeoffs or Landings

It’s totally understandable to want to get a good look at obstacles, jumps and drops before you ride them – that’s sensible and safe. However, be careful how you do this. Be aware of your surroundings and find the best place to stop, lay your bike and stand. Remember that this is the Bike Park not your own personal trails, chances are there is another rider (or many riders) coming right behind you, with speed. Share and be aware.

2. No Stopping in the Middle of the Trail

As with #1, always be aware there are other people on the trails, all the trails. Unlike on ski runs, where skiers and boarders have to give way to those below them, bike trails are much narrower and don’t give riders much room to avoid one another. Blocking or standing on a trail is an accident waiting to happen. Always find a safe place with plenty of room to pull over.

3. Master Going Medium Before You Start Going Big

Sure, you want to progress you riding and elevate your game but do it slowly and carefully. Work your way up to those all those bigger drops, larger jumps, and more technical trail features. Don’t think that because something is in plain sight of spectators or because it’s the “last run of the day” that you’ll suddenly magically be graced with the skills to successfully and safely complete that feature. Start on similar yet smaller features first, get a lesson, or just take your time.

4. Be Prepared

Is your bike in good running order? Nothing brings a biking holiday to crashing halt like a mechanical malfunction. Before leaving home make sure your bike has been serviced by a competent mechanic. Our  bike shop has an array of parts but they may not have replacements in stock, bring your own. Inspect, clean and service your bike every night while you are riding. Remember the P’s – Proper Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Spotting potential problems before they escalate can mean more time ripping and enjoying the rides.

5. Obey Trail Signs

If it says it is closed then it is closed to YOU. Yes, the trail crew is a secret troupe of magical fairies that flit around the forest repairing and building trails while you sleep but sometimes they need to close a trail during the day to give it a little more pixie dust than usual. If you see a closed sign then don’t disrupt the magic.

Also, if a sign says ‘Drop’, ‘Obstacle’, ‘Black Diamond’ or simply ‘Beware’ then pay attention. Signs, signs everywhere are signs – but they all have a very specific job. Read and take heed.

6. Most Importantly…

Have fun. Ride hard. Play safe.

Using the Features: 

Know Before You Go / Look Before You Leap:

Trail safety is everybody’s responsibility. It is your responsibility to inspect the trails and features before use. Trail features vary in size and difficulty and change constantly due to weather, maintenance, usage, modifications, and the time of day. Only one person on a feature at a time.

Do not use trails or features that are closed.

Use Your Head: Remain in control and within your ability level. Do not use features if you lack sufficient ability and/or experience. You control the level of difficulty you encounter using these features both on the ground and in the air. There is no shame in walking your bike if you feel you are on a trail or feature that is beyond your skill level.

We all know learning a new skill doesn’t always come easy. Thunder Mountain Bike Park has a group of instructors specially trained in gravity riding. Taking a lesson with one of these instructors can be the safest and easiest way to learn the bike park terrain and its features.

It is very important to ride the right bike at Downhill Mountain Bike Park. The same way you wouldn’t bring a pea shooter to a pistol fight, you need to have the correct gear for the park. A downhill bike has plush suspension in both the front and rear to smooth out the bumps on rugged trails. Rent a bike if you don’t have your own and ask the rental technician to tune the suspension to your body weight and skills.

There is a reason why most riders are wearing armor- it works. Crashing is a possibility no matter how slow or cautious you ride and protecting yourself from cuts and scrapes with pads is a must.

A proper fitting full-face helmet is the way to go. Protect your face and head by wearing it done up properly under the chin.

Injuries are a common and expected part of mountain-biking. We strongly suggest that full face helmets, full length gloves, biking armor and a full suspension bike be used in the Bike Park. If you are new to the mountain-biking program at Thunder Mountain Bike Park, or the Parent or Guardian of a younger rider, please familiarize yourself with the mountain-biking activities we offer. Introductory mountain-biking lessons and beginner mountain-biking terrain are available. More challenging terrain and features should not be attempted unless the rider has the appropriate skills, experience and equipment to effectively negotiate such trail sections. Please speak to Customer Service for more information regarding mountain-biking at Thunder Mountain Bike Park.
